“Rock” Music   Leave a comment

Ok, I know that this is off tangent, but to be honest I really could not be bothered to get a new profile on here. Music, is it just me or has music really gone down hill over the last 10 – 15 years? I think it has. The last great decade was the 80’s, the early part of the 90’s was not too bad, but listening to the radio every day, and I listen to the words and music, just makes me sad. There is so little effort going into the song writing and score that 2 sentences = the entire song. What the Fuck is going on. Where is the talent?

Granted, repetitive songs have been around since at least the ‘60’s, including songs from the likes of the Beatles. Also I am into Rock music, and yet bands like Cold Play, Oasis, Blur, Artic Monkeys are classed as Rock Bands. Even some New Romantic bands are classed as Rock, along with the Mod bands, Jam and the Who.

So these bands stand alongside the likes of Ozzy, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, etc. Yes, Ok, Right, keep taking the meds. Please. Just because someone plays the guitar in the band does not = Rock. Even U2 I do not class as Rock, just Pop rock. Not in the same league as Rock or Metal bands. Even with covers it just turns into a pile of shite. Whitesnake, the soft rock band from the ‘80’s did Is This Love? Not a bad song, but earlier this year someone covered it, a woman, do not know her name, but she took out most of the guitar and ALL of the feelings which Whitesnake put into the original and ended up with a love-song with absolutely no emotional content that I would not even play it to a goldfish, let alone someone I really loved, that would be insulting them. So Where is the Talent? Few and Far Between. Where are the Feelings?

And I am sorry but a 10 second basic scale does not equal a solo, nor does a 20 second repeated scale. If you want to hear decent Guitar work, try listening to Dire Straits, or AC/DC or Van Halen, especially Eruption from their 1st album, or Following written and performed by Miss Michael “Micki“ Steele, the Bangles, yes the Bangles, Eternal Indigestion sorry Flame, Manic Monday, Walk Like an Egyptian, The Bangles. Lynyrd Skynyrd and not just Freebird, or Free or Gary Moore or Jimi Hendrix or Santana or Stevie Ray Vaughan . There is some great guitar out there.
